Itinerary
Tanzania can truly claim to be the home of the safari as “safari” is Swahili for “journey”. And there are few better places to enjoy an enriching cultural and wildlife experience than Tanzania.
The Premier Southern Circuit visits two of the most remote areas of southern Tanzania, the Selous Game Reserve and Ruaha National Park, staying in stylish rustic accommodation throughout with transfers between camps by light aircraft.
Day 1 (Dar es Salaam to Selous Game Reserve)
Upon arrival into Dar es Salaam you will be met having cleared customs and immigration, and assisted to the Domestic Terminal in time for your scheduled 45 minute Coastal Air flight to Kiba Airstrip (Selous), departing at 08:30. On arrival you will be met and transferred to Sand Rivers Lodge for a three night stay on Full Board.
The Selous is the largest game reserve in Africa, bigger even than Denmark or Switzerland and three times the size of the Serengeti. The reserve is home to some 200,000 buffalo, 30,000 elephant and 80,000 wildebeest. And yet the park has far less accommodation than the more famous Serengeti and has more of a remote and classical “old African” feel about it.
Days 2-3 (Selous Game Reserve)
Two full days to explore the Selous.
Day 4 (Selous to Ruaha)
Transfer back to Kiba Airstrip in time for your 90 minute Coastal Air flight to
Msembe Airstrip (Ruaha) departing at 09:30. Met on arrival with a transfer to Mwagusi Camp for a 4 night stay on Full Board.
The Ruaha is Tanzania’s second largest game reserve with the central area of the park between the Nzombe and Ruaha rivers. The park has diverse eco-systems with large swathes of miombo woodland, undulating plains, swamps and evergreen forests and is known for large herds of elephant and buffalo as well as an abundance of big cats and the increasingly rarely seen African Wild (Hunting) Dog.
Mwagusi Safari Camp is a small tented camp set on the banks of the Mwagusi River. The accommodation consists of “old style” reed and thatch en-suite chalets. A particular speciality at Mwagusi are walking safaris to complement the 4x4 based game drives.
Days 5-7 (Ruaha National Park)
Three full days to explore the Ruaha National Park.
Day 8 (Ruaha to Dar es Salaam)
Scheduled Coastal Air transfer to Dar es Salaam departing at 1145 for your homeward flight or onwards to Zanzibar.
